🇪🇺 1. EURO ZONE INFLATION JUMPS TO 3.8%

Euro zone inflation rose to 3.8% in September, driven by an 18.8% surge in energy prices, while services rose 3.2% and food 1.4%. Six member states now have inflation of 5% or more, raising pressure on the ECB ahead of its 29 October meeting.

🇫🇷 2. FRANCE TARGETS €54 BILLION OF SAVINGS
France's 2027 budget bill includes €54 billion of savings, €43 billion of them new measures, aiming to cut the deficit to 5% of GDP next year. Interest payments will make up more than half of next year's deficit.

🇬🇧 3. BANK OF ENGLAND WARNS FINANCIAL RISKS HAVE RISEN
The Bank of England said the risk of weaknesses in the financial system crystallising has increased. It pointed to bond yields at levels not seen since 2008, driven by higher oil and gas prices, and the rapid growth of AI-related debt issuance.

🇩🇪 6. VOLKSWAGEN TERMINATES WAGE DEALS, STRIKES LOOM
Volkswagen terminated several wage agreements with IG Metall, effective 31 December, including an umbrella deal covering about 100,000 workers. The union vowed to escalate the dispute, with a strike truce expiring on 1 January; talks resume in the second half of October.

🇩🇪 7. BERLIN SETS CONDITIONS FOR UNICREDIT'S COMMERZBANK PUSH
The German government, which owns 13.3% of Commerzbank, expects UniCredit to give firm commitments on jobs and on Germany as a business location. UniCredit already controls close to half of the bank's voting rights.

🇺🇦 9. EU RELEASES €2.9 BILLION TO UKRAINE
Ukraine received €2.9 billion from the EU's Ukraine Facility after meeting 10 reform targets in banking, energy, agriculture and transport. Kyiv said the funds will free up more of its own resources for defence, while President Zelensky called it very timely support.

🇳🇱 10. STELLANTIS REBOUNDS FROM RECORD LOW
Stellantis shares jumped 7.6% on 1 October after hitting an all-time low, as Ram pickup sales rose 34% in the third quarter. CEO Antonio Filosa reconfirmed the carmaker's 2026 guidance and its aim to be cash-flow positive in 2027.
