Economic & Business Developments
🏦 1. CENTRAL BANK HOLDS POLICY RATE AT 9.25%
Banco de Moçambique maintained its MIMO policy rate at 9.25% on 30 September 2026, while announcing changes to its reserve requirement regime. The central bank cited climate shocks, geopolitical uncertainty and potential increases in international food and fuel prices amid a slow economic recovery.
Business significance: Suppliers should assess customers' actual borrowing costs and working-capital capacity rather than treating the policy rate as the cost of commercial credit.

🔥 2. MOZAMBIQUE LNG RESTART RESHAPES THE PROJECT PIPELINE
TotalEnergies and Mozambique's government announced the full restart of onshore and offshore Mozambique LNG activities on 29 January 2026, following the lifting of force majeure in November 2025. At the restart announcement, project completion stood at approximately 40%, with first LNG expected in 2029.
Business significance: GSR identifies potential supplier opportunities in construction support, industrial maintenance, logistics and workforce services. These depend on contractor qualification, procurement schedules and security conditions.

🚢 3. CORAL NORTH ADVANCES MOZAMBIQUE'S OFFSHORE GAS EXPANSION
Eni announced the hull launch of the Coral North floating LNG facility on 16 January 2026. The unit is designed for 3.6 million tonnes of annual liquefaction capacity, with project completion targeted for 2028. According to Eni, it will bring Mozambique's combined LNG output to approximately 7 million tonnes annually.
Business significance: GSR sees a potential market for specialised marine services, technical training and maintenance support as the offshore gas industry expands. Planned capacity should be distinguished from production already operating.

📦 4. MAPUTO PORT RECORD UNDERLINES REGIONAL LOGISTICS ROLE
The Port of Maputo handled a record 32 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, an increase of 3.4% from 2024. MPDC's direct operations accounted for 15.2 million tonnes, rising 6.4% year on year. The figures represent completed-year performance, rather than a 2026 forecast.
Business significance: GSR identifies cargo handling, equipment maintenance, warehousing and transport coordination as areas worth examining. Commercial prospects depend on individual terminal investments and customer contracts.

⚡ 5. WORLD BANK STRATEGY PRIORITISES ENERGY AND ECONOMIC CORRIDORS
The World Bank Group approved a new 2026–2031 Country Partnership Framework for Mozambique in January. Its priorities include fiscal stability, workforce skills, energy access and private-sector employment in agribusiness and tourism. The institution aims to mobilise approximately USD 2.5 billion over the framework period.
Business significance: GSR's reading is that companies should monitor specific projects and procurement notices in these sectors. The framework sets a development direction; it does not mean the full amount is immediately available for contracts.

💧 6. WATER SECURITY COMPACT TARGETS LONG-TERM RESILIENCE
Mozambique launched its ProAguas Water Security Compact 2026–2036 on 19 May 2026, addressing water-sector challenges affecting communities and economic activity. The World Bank highlights the country's exposure to floods and droughts and the importance of water security for employment, exports and production.
Business significance: GSR identifies pumps, irrigation, water treatment, storage and monitoring technology as potential opportunity areas. Suppliers should distinguish programme ambitions from funded, tender-ready projects.

🎯 GSR PERSPECTIVE
These developments point to three commercial themes: energy-project supply chains, regional logistics and resilient infrastructure.
For exporters and service providers, the practical next step is to identify the buyer, project stage, procurement route and payment structure. Announced investment creates a pipeline; qualified customers and funded contracts turn that pipeline into business.
